My kind, funny, generous, silly, sweet, beautiful gram passed away suddenly last night. In addition to being a deeply devoted mother, wife and grandmother, she spent 33 years of her life teaching at a pre-school serving particularly vulnerable students. Growing up, I have countless memories of people of all ages approaching my grandmother in public to tell her she had taught them/ their child/ their parent 5/10/15/20 years prior and had left a powerful impression on their minds and hearts. I learned very early on how important it is to love your neighbors, to open your heart to the world, to sing when you can, to count your blessings and to spread them as far as they'd reach.
This video was taken last year when I made a surprise visit back to NY from Ireland. I was so scared that she'd pass when I was abroad, or that I'd come home and she wouldn't remember me. She surprised me with a song asking for a few more days together. I'm so grateful to have known her, to have been molded by her and to have learned from her enduring examples of empathy, awareness, life and love.
All's fair in love and Candy Land. Sorry, @jorgelunadj
